How Passports Bilk Parents

Hey Americans, guess what? If you have kids, you’ll be paying out the nose for their passports.

For adults, the fees break down like this:

Processing fee $55
Application execution $30
Security surcharge $12
Photos (approx.) $14
Total: $111

For children under 16:

Processing fee $40
Application execution $30
Security surcharge $12
Photos (approx.) $14
Total: $96

Here’s the rub: An adult passport is valid for 10 years; a child’s is only valid for 5. Thus, if we divide the cost by number of years the passport is valid, we get this:

Adult: $11.10/person/year
Child: $19.20/child/year

Nice, eh? Add that to the myriad number of ways that parents pay unfair surcharges. Apparently you can deduct passport fees if the travel is for business. I wonder how I can get swing that without running afoul of the child-labor laws …
